Speaking for the first time since his high-profile dismissal, Coote said that he occasionally used drugs as an escape from struggles with his sexuality and the intense pressure and abuse he encountered as a referee.
However, the 42-year-old also conceded there was no excusing a leaked video which showed him calling Liverpool ‘s**t’ and former Reds manager Jurgen Klopp an ‘absolute c**t’.
Coote admitted that ‘he was not sober’ when the two short clips were filmed and. Sought to apologise for any offence cause.
‘I recognise that they fell well short of standards that are expecte of a top level referee and I deeply regret saying what I said,’ Coote told.
‘That video has been with somebody for more than four years.
‘I’d forgotten it existe and I was sitting waiting for my car to be service and then received a call to say that it had surfaced on social media and I was devastate.
‘I deeply regret that I found myself in that position. The comments are not reflective of my views of any of the individuals concerned or my wider views in general.’
Coote, however, strenuously denied allegations that he deliberately booke a player having discusse it with a friend before officiating a match.
The former referee, who is still under investigation for the alleged incident, said: ‘There was no agreement prior to the game. I went and did my job. The player committed a yellow card tackle.
‘I received nothing for it. I’m really disappointe that anything like this has come out because it tarnishes the integrity of the game.
‘And whatever people think of me as a referee, as a human I have always gone out and done my best on the pitch.’
Coote also talked openly about the abuse he had faced during his career prior to his sacking which had taken a toll on his emotional state.
‘I’ve received death threats during my career,’ he said.
